Frequently Asked Questions - Dropper Batch
Is taking a drop year for JEE the right decision?
If you're passionate about getting into a top IIT and believe you can perform better with focused preparation, then yes. A drop year, when utilized properly under expert guidance, often leads to dramatic improvements. However, you must be self-motivated and committed. At Meritroot, 85% of our dropper students achieve significantly better ranks in their second attempt, with many securing IIT admissions that seemed impossible after their first attempt.
How much can I improve my JEE score in a drop year?
On average, our dropper students improve their JEE Main score by 60-100 marks with focused preparation. Some improve even more dramatically - we've had students go from 140 to 240+ marks. The key is identifying what went wrong in the first attempt and systematically fixing those gaps. With our personalized approach, dedicated mentoring, and extensive mock test practice, substantial improvement is very achievable.
Do you have separate batches for droppers?
Yes! We run dedicated dropper batches separate from Class 11 and 12 students. This is important because droppers need a different pace, more intensive preparation, and face unique psychological challenges. In dropper-only batches, all students share the same goal and determination, creating a highly motivated learning environment. The teaching approach, problem difficulty level, and mock test frequency are all optimized for second-attempt students.
When should I join the dropper batch?
Ideally join in May right after your first JEE attempt while concepts are fresh. This gives you maximum preparation time (12 months) for the next JEE. We also accept admissions until July, though starting early is recommended. Students who join in May have shown better results than those joining late. Don't waste the crucial May-June period - join immediately after your first attempt to make the most of your drop year.
What if I feel demotivated during the drop year?
This is common and we're prepared for it. Each dropper student gets a personal mentor who conducts weekly one-on-one sessions to maintain motivation. We also run monthly motivational sessions with successful dropper alumni who share their experiences. Our faculty is trained to recognize signs of demotivation and intervene early. The peer support in dropper batches also helps - you're surrounded by others fighting the same battle.
What is the daily schedule for dropper students?
Dropper batch has intensive 6-7 hour daily classes: Morning session (9 AM - 1 PM) covering theory and problem-solving, afternoon session (2 PM - 5 PM) for doubt clearing and tests. Since you don't have school or board exams, we maximize classroom contact time. Evening and night are for self-study. This schedule is designed to keep you engaged and productive throughout the day, preventing time wastage.
Should I take admission in a college alongside JEE preparation?
We strongly advise against this. Trying to manage college and JEE preparation simultaneously defeats the purpose of taking a focused drop year. The whole point is 100% dedication to JEE. Most students who try to do both end up performing poorly in JEE again. If you're taking a drop, commit fully to it. After cracking JEE and getting your dream IIT, the one-year gap won't matter at all in your career.
What happens if I don't crack JEE even in second attempt?
With proper preparation, this is unlikely - 85% of our dropper students achieve their target. However, we also counsel students about backup options like NITs, IIITs, and state engineering colleges. Many of our students who don't make it to IITs get excellent NITs. We also guide students about other career options and entrance exams. Our approach is to give your absolute best shot at IIT while being realistic about all possibilities.
