SN1 and SN2 Reaction Mechanisms
Source year: 20265 marksSN2 Mechanism:
Bimolecular nucleophilic substitution. Proceeds in a single step via a transition state. Rate depends on both substrate and nucleophile concentration.
Order of reactivity: Primary > Secondary > Tertiary.
SN1 Mechanism:
Unimolecular nucleophilic substitution. Proceeds in two steps involving a carbocation intermediate. Rate depends only on substrate concentration.
Order of reactivity: Tertiary > Secondary > Primary.
