Formulae

Revisit important relationships and quick revision formulae.

Height

h = d × tan θ

Angle of Elevation

Angle formed by line of sight with horizontal when looking UP at an object

Angle of Depression

Angle formed by line of sight with horizontal when looking DOWN at an object

Height and Distance

tan θ = Height/Distance\nsin θ = Height/Slant distance\ncos θ = Base distance/Slant distance

∑

Derivations

Work through the reasoning behind key concepts.

Height from angle of elevation

Given: angle of elevation θ and distance from base d. In right triangle: tan θ = height/distance. Therefore: height h = d × tan θ. This is used to find heights of towers, buildings, etc.

Height of Object

Given: Angle of elevation θ, distance from base d\nIn right triangle: tan θ = h/d\nTherefore: Height h = d × tan θ
